As an experienced teacher/tutor, I am currently working as the Achievement Director of Maths in a central London secondary school. Leading the Maths department over the last few years has been a challenge as the majority of the students come from low socio-economic backgrounds with very little ambition or drive. However, my maths department set out to change the stigma behind the chances of success for such students. With the right guidance, support and encouragement, on average, GCSE students in my school now obtain at least ONE grade better than students at schools with similar intakes. I have 3 degrees MEng, MBA and a PGCE. I initially started tutoring whilst at Queen Mary University by helping out students a year or more below me in their respective course. I really loved the experience as it gave me plenty of satisfaction knowing that I was helping shape the careers of my peers. From there I started tutoring more and more in my spare time. This eventually led me into teaching. Maths has always been a passion for me but I understand that for some students it can be cumbersome and anxiety-inducing. I always endeavour to make my students feel comfortable through well-planned lessons to overcome common misconceptions and I teach with a personable attitude showing care and diligence to each student. I have taught students of various abilities and learning needs including SEN, dyslexia, dyspraxia, high achievers and Oxbridge candidates. I am always able to adapt my teaching style to suit an individual`s needs. I have been trained to use research-based tools to inform teaching, a system that my department has been extremely successful with. The Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) style is highly effective and acts as hook to learning. I make my lessons engaging and relatable, always using real life examples to make the concepts easier to digest. Each lesson begins with a High Intensity Retrieval activity. This is proven to be the most effective way for learning to be consolidated in the long-term memory. The Ebbinghaus forgetting curve explains this in detail. I also update my teaching style to reflect current research to ensure my students get the best deal possible and to deliver results. My classroom experience and leadership of the department has enabled me to have a strong grasp of the Maths curriculum. My sole aim is to help dedicated students better their target grade whilst having fun and enjoying the process at the same time. I am in the perfect place to provide you with real value. Together, I want to help you reach whatever goals you have in mind. Whether you want some extra assistance around exam techniques or a long-term guide as you make your way through GCSEs, I will be flexible and willing to work with you and around your schedule. With advanced technology available, online tutoring is just as productive and effective as in person.
